Russian victory in Mixed Sprint Relay

Posted on | March 4, 2012 | Category: News

The Russian pairing of Andrey Grigoriev and Polina Malchikova enjoyed a comfortable victory in the final Ski Orienteering World Cup race in Kazakhstan, the Mixed Sprint Relay. They were in the Finish 1.34 ahead of their closest opposition, Finland 3 comprising Janne Häkkinen and Marjut Turunen.

The winners led the race – 6 loops, alternate man and woman with the man starting first – almost throughout. Finland 2 led into the first change-over by 3 seconds, but on the second leg Polina Malchikova established a lead of 30 seconds and the Russian pair made few mistakes after that.

Finland 1 – Staffan Tunis and Sonja Mörsky – finished third, and they were followed by two more Russian teams. After yesterday’s successes in the Middle distance race, Sweden disappointed with their best team on the day, Erik Rost and Josefine Engström, placing sixth. The home nation’s best team was seventh and the much-fancied pairing of Peter Arnesson and Tove Alexandersson, Sweden finished eighth. Significant early errors left them almost 3 minutes down on the lead at the end of the second leg.

After two weeks of intense competition in Ukraine and Kazakhstan, the athletes can now head home for a well-deserved break before the final round of the season, which consists of three individual races and a relay in the period 21-25 March at Boden in Sweden.
