Olav Lundanes (left) at the Middle flower ceremony – he went one better today

Olav Lundanes, Norway ran a superb race today on a very tough course to take victory by the impressive margin of 1.46. The silver medal went to Thierry Gueorgiou and the bronze to Daniel Hubmann – giving the same three medallists as in 2015.

Lundanes, who lives just a few minutes away across the border, was fastest at the first split and gradually caught up the three starters before him – Daniel Hubmann, Carl Godager Kaas and Matthias Kyburz – and they were then running together at a high tempo. Thierry Gueorgiou, the very last starter, also maintained a good speed and passed the arena just 7 seconds down on Hubmann.  Lundanes and Hubmann then got away a little from the other two on the final section, but Gueorgiou was travelling the fastest and was 19 seconds up on Hubmann at the end.

This is the third WOC Long Distance gold for Lundanes: he won in 2010 and 2012 as well. Last year it was bronze.

Gueorgiou ran the last part of the course with fellow countryman Lucas Basset who finished in fourth place. Norwegians Carl Godager Kaas, fifth and Magne Dæhli, sixth, completed a fantastic day for Norway.

The winning time was really impressive in the difficult wet conditions and hilly and tough terrain.

Mention should be made of Timo Sild, Estonia, who with Fredrik Bakkman, Sweden made a lot of the early pace, but tired towards the end and finished outside the podium places.

Tomorrow is a rest day for the athletes, and the Championships end on Saturday with the forest Relay, based at the same arena as today.
