Simone Niggli is certainly back. In her first international championship since 2010 she showed that she’s as strong as ever by winning the European Championships middle distance with a margin of 1.25 before Minna Kauppi, Finland, on second place.

Simone Niggli gave birth to twins in August last year, but says now she is in better shape than ever before. Which is easy to believe when even the reigning World Champion on middle distance, Helena Jansson from Sweden, lost nearly 3 minutes to Niggli. Jansson finished fourth, after Tatiana Ryabkina, Russia, on third place.

The competition was physically very demanding, but also many mistakes were made in the detailed areas. For maps, gps tracking, results and more, please visit the event website. Interviews from the middle distance will appear in Around the Arena on the IOF frontpage later today.

The European Championships continue with long distance final on Friday.
