New World Anti-Doping Code approved

Posted on | November 15, 2013 | Category: News

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Foundation Board has at its meeting this morning approved the new World Anti-Doping Code. The Code introduces stronger sanctions for athletes violating the rules, and more flexibility for whereabouts and TUEs.

“It is the clean athlete that wins with the new Code”, says IOF Assistant Secretary General Anna Jacobson.  “The sanctions for anti-doping rule violations are stronger, but there won’t be as many “unnecessary” sanctions, as both whereabouts and TUE systems have been made more flexible. This is definitely good for sports in general and for orienteering in particular.”

WADA President John Fahey concluded the Conference by saying: “Today is a good day. It’s a good day for the athletes, and a good day for our future!”

The new World Anti-Doping Code will come into effect on 1 January 2015. The IOF Anti-Doping rules will be revised during 2014 to be in compliance with the new Code in the beginning of 2015. Member federations will be kept up-to-date about the development.
