New control process for mapping for IOF events

Posted on | November 21, 2017 | Category: News

Map quality is a major topic of discussion among orienteers. Following the introduction of the latest standard, ISOM 2017, the IOF Council has agreed with the  recommendation of the Map Commission and will be instituting a new process for the control of the mapping done for IOF major events.

The process follows a successful path chosen by the Swedish Orienteering Federation for controlling maps. Since 2014, maps for major Swedish events, have gone through a technical desk-review process. This has resulted in the number of deviations from the map standard going from thousands to nearly zero over the past 4 years. The process includes the following:

  • The map is checked in OCAD using the software´s tools to check the size of area symbols and the length of some critical line symbols.
  • All symbols on the map are compared with a correct standard map to check that symbols have the correct form and size in accordance with the current map standard.
  • An optical (manual) check of the use of form lines and an overall check of the drawing (distance between symbols etc.) is performed.

The entire control takes approximately 1-1,5 hours and results in a list of errors and improvements. This list can then be used by the IOF Senior Event Adviser, the organiser and mapper to improve the map quality as far as adherence to the standard. The control will be performed by members of the Map Commission initially for major events in 2018 and 2019.
