New Competition Rules and Protocol Guide

The Competition rules for all four disciplines have been revised and updated. The IOF Protocol Guide has also been updated. See below for links to the new revisions and also summary of major changes.

Foot Orienteering Competition Rules (Link)

Significant changes to the previous printed version (January 2016). Rule paragraph references are to the new January 2017 rules (unless otherwise stated).

  • 1.5 Types of start added.
  • 3.2 WOC Alternating programme from 2019 onwards.
  • 3.3 WCup Relay World Cup reintroduced.
  • 4.5 WOC Organiser appointed by IOF Council every year.
  • Section 6 Qualification rules moved to Section 12.
  • 6.7 WOC Participation from 2019 onwards defined for Middle and Long distance competitions.
  • 7.2 Late payment may be subject to an additional fee.
  • 7.3 Late entries and changes shall be accepted by the organiser if possible.
  • 7.4 WOC WCup JWOC Standard charges for late entries and changes.
  • 8.7 WOC JWOC Bulletin 3 shall be published 3 months before the event.
  • 9.11 In relays late changes may only be made with a valid reason (e.g. accident or illness).
  • 12.9 In qualification race competitions, if two or more competitors tie for a place in a final, all of them shall qualify for that final.
  • 12.10 WOC Qualification rules from 2019 onwards for Middle Distance final.
  • 12.15 WOC JWOC Requirement for heat allocation to be kept secret has been removed.
  • 12.20 WOC Sprint Qualification start interval may be 1 or 1.5 minutes.
  • 12.21 JWOC Middle distance qualification race start interval is 3 minutes.
  • 13.1 WOC WCup JWOC Team officials meetings do not have to be held the day before a competition; they can be earlier and can cover more than one competition.
  • 21.4 Revised wording for the GPS equipment rule which will normally allow GPS watches to be worn.
  • 25 Certificates renamed diplomas
  • 25.11 WCup The first 6 receive diplomas.
  • 26.3 It is the responsibility of competitors to obtain any required TUE (therapeutic use exemption) certificate.
  • Appendix 7 EOC From 2020 it is organised every year with the opposite programme to the WOC programme.
  • New Appendix 8 The European Youth Orienteering Championships.
  • New Appendix 12 The South American Orienteering Championships.

MTB Orienteering Competition Rules (Link)

Significant changes to the previous version (January 2016). These rules represent a revision of the January 2016 rules. Significant changes are noted below. References are to the 2017 rule numbers.

  • 1.5 Types of start added.
  • 3.2 Extra mass-start competition in WMTBOC.
  •  3.6 Extra mass-start competition in JWMTBOC.
  • 3.7 Extra mass-start competition in WMMTBOC.
  • 7.2 Late payment may be subject to an additional fee.
  • 7.3 Late entries and changes shall be accepted by the organiser if possible.
  • 7.4 WMTBOC WCup JWMTBOC Standard charges for late entries and changes.
  • 6.11 JWMTBOC No limit on the number of competitors in a team.
  • 14.3 Reference to MTBO Embargo Guidelines Appendix 8.
  • 14.9 Riding outside the mapped area is not allowed.
  • 16.8 WMTBOC WCup JWMTBOC Winning times added for mass-start race.
  • 16.9 WMMTBOC Winning times added for mass-start race.
  • 21.11 GPS devices may be carried provided that they have no map display.
  • 22.16 Order of teams in mass start amended.
  • 23.5 Light beam shall be 30 cm above the ground (raised from 15 cm.).
  • 25 Certificates renamed diplomas.
  • 25.11 WCup The first 6 receive diplomas.
  • 26.4 It is the responsibility of competitors to obtain any required TUE (therapeutic use exemption) certificate.
  • Appendix 8 New embargo guidelines for major MTBO events.
  • Appendix 9 EMTBOC Programme reduced to 3 days.
  • Appendix 10 Rules for EJMTBOC.
  • Appendix 11 Rules for EYMTBOC.

  • 1.5 Starting methods added
  • 3.2 WSOC Organised every year from 2020 with an alternating programme
  • 3.3 WCup Organised every year from 2020
  • 7.2 Late payment may be subject to an additional fee.
  • 7.3 Late entries and changes shall be accepted by the organiser if possible.
  • 7.4 WSOC WCup JWSOC Standard charges for late entries and changes.
  • 16.12 WMSOC Winning times equalised for Women and Men.
  • 21.6 Revised wording for the GPS equipment rule which will normally allow GPS watches to be worn.
  • 25 Certificates renamed diplomas.
  • 25.10 WCup The first 6 receive diplomas.

  • 7.2 Late payment may be subject to an additional fee.
  • 7.3 Late entries and changes shall be accepted by the organiser if possible.
  • 7.4 Standard charges for late entries and changes.
  • 16 Timed controls section (previously section 17) added into Courses section.
  • 22.10-22.14 Extra rules for managing the relay,
  • 22.15 Rule for quarantine zones.
  • 24.9 Clarification of when results may be shown.
  • 25 Certificates renamed diplomas.
  • 26.2 Wheelchair users must have priority to the side of the track nearest to the controls and access to decision points.
  • 26.4 Sentence removed saying organiser may require information on prescribed medication.

  • 6.3 The flower ceremony is organised for the three best athletes or three best relay teams as reflected by the
    preliminary results list. The medal ceremony is organised for the six best athletes or six best relay teams as reflected by the official
