24-year-old Lizzie Ingham finished 9th in this year’s World Orienteering Championships Sprint, the best-ever result by a New Zealand orienteer at senior level. This is however far from the end of her ambitions: our Athlete of September aims to be on the podium at the World Cup start next year in New Zealand, and amongst the best of the world in the long term. “The latter is a long-term goal; I want to be remembered for consistently good results over my career, not just a one-off result!”, Lizzie says.

Lizzie was taken along to her first orienteering event in New Zealand when she was 3 days old. Now, 24 years later, she has proved that one does not need to live in Europe to succeed. Read about the story behind her success, as well as why she really looks forward to the World Cup Round 1 next year (“Personally I just can’t wait to show off our beautiful country to the best orienteers in the world, and show off the best orienteers in the world to our country!”) in Athlete of the Month.
