MTB Orienteering World Cup: Middle distance wins for Benham and Foliforov

Posted on | July 18, 2014 | Category: News

The second round of this year’s MTBO World Cup is being held as part of the O-Ringen event in Skåne, Sweden. Athletes from 22 nations are taking part. The first races over Middle distance were won by Emily Benham, Great Britain and Anton Foliforov, Russia.

The race was held in a large area of coastal open pine forest with sand dunes near Åhus, with a dense path network making for fast riding if at times a bit sandy. In both the women’s and the men’s race the estimated winning time was beaten by almost 4 minutes.

Emily Benham won the women’s race with a 1-minute lead over Marika Hara, Finland. “A technically demanding course and physical terrain! Mostly solid orienteering but not completely mistake free”, said Emily afterwards. Third was the Russian Svetlana Poverina.

The men’s race was closer, with Foliforov just 8 seconds faster than his fellow-countryman Ruslan Gritsan. Pekka Niemi, Finland was 13 seconds slower than Gritsan in third place.

The next race (Saturday) is a Sprint in the outskirts of Kristianstad.
