Mountain Bike Orienteering World Cup: Schaffner and Saarela head standings

Posted on | April 27, 2010 | Category: News

At the end of Round 1 staged in Hungary, leaders in the World Cup standings are Christine Schaffner, Switzerland and Samuli Saarela, Finland. Both won two of the three races and have a clear points lead over second-placed Michaela Gigon, Austria and Erik Skovgaard Knudsen, Denmark. Nine different nations are represented by the ten best women and men.

In the women’s class, eight different nations are represented by the ten best riders in the standings, demonstrating that no one nation dominates MTBO at the present time and the number of nations able to contribute athletes at the highest class in the sport is now quite high. The ten best men represent seven different nations. Finland and the Czech Republic have the highest count with four riders overall, followed by Russia with three.

Michaela Gigon continues to lead the women’s World Rankings list, followed by Christine Schaffner and Hana Bajtošová, Slovakia. The men’s list is headed by Lasse Brun Pedersen, Denmark who was unable to ride in Hungary, with Jiri Hradil, Czech Republic second and Ruslan Gritsan, Russia third.
