Matthias Niggli: an end to coaching, but not leaving the sport

WC sprint finale Liestal Søndag 5. oktober 2014

For Matthias Niggli it was the end of a nine year long period as national coach with the final of the World Cup. Now he is ready to bring the World Cup a step or three further.

He and his wife and former top star Simone Niggli have put forward plans to increase the standard of the World Cup. They got a lot of positive support, and there is a group working with the plan. There could be a new World Cup format in the future; Matthias hopes that he and Simone can be in charge of it. He isn’t at all fed up with orienteering after being so deeply involved for such a very long time. First, he himself was one of the best in the world. Then he became the head coach of the Swiss national team.

“I have enjoyed being at training camps and races, but after nine years it’s time for a change, but I hope I can be involved with the World Cup.”

This weekend there were again some impressive results from the Swiss. Matthias was a big part of it. Now at least he will not be the coach. “We will see how it will be,” he smiles.

Wife Simone Niggli finished her international career one year ago. In 2016 they are in charge of the Junior World Championships in Engadin valley.

Patrick Thoma will be the new national head coach. He has been head coach of the Swiss juniors for the last 5 years.
