Matthias’ day in sprint

Posted on | June 17, 2011 | Category: Arena

What a day for Switzerland with five men on top of the results list at the first World Cup event of this year and first of them all a first year senior. In addition, only Fabian Hertner (3rd) managed to break the Matthias day: winner Matthias Kyburz was followed in the results list by Matthias Merz (2nd) and Matthias Müller (4th).

“This was very nice”, smiles Matthias Kyburz.

The 21-year-old athlete won sprint at the Junior World Orienteering Championships in Italy two years ago. Now is among the very best seniors in the world.

How can you have self confidence to to so well when you are so young?
“In Switzerland have I done pretty well in sprint races earlier this year. When I did that I knew I could do well also internationally”, he says.

Matthias Merz finished second. He made some small mistakes. “When I made the mistakes I understood that would be beaten by a Swiss.”

Only by someone from Switzerland?
“There are also others that are good, but we like sprint and are good at that in Switzerland”, he says.

On the third place was Fabian Hertner who won gold in sprint at the European Championships last year.

The winner Matthias Kyburz is not sure if he will be chosen to the Swiss team for the World Championships in France in August.
“But if I manage to be in the team I go for sprint”, he says.

The team will be picked out after the first round of the World Cup so it seems Matthias Kyburz just took a big step towards participation in France.

What a day. Matthias Merz (left), Matthias Kyburz and Fabian Hertner took the three first places, followed by World Champions Matthias Müller and Daniel Hubmann, also Switzerland.
