Long distance: all women’s medals to Russia!

Posted on | February 26, 2012 | Category: News

Polina Malchikova, Russia won gold again today after similar success earlier in the week in the two relay races, and so did Finland’s Staffan Tunis, already Sprint and relay gold medallist. Russia also took the silver and bronze medals in the women’s race.

Russia had four in the first six in the women’s race. Malchikova went one better than her Sprint race performance where she lost to Josefine Engström and won by 26 seconds from Anastasia Kravchenko, with Tatyana Kozlova third a further 13 seconds down.

Staffan Tunis’s second individual gold was taken in style – a victory by 1 minute and 11 seconds over Russia’s Andrey Lamov.  The young Norwegian Hans Jørgen Kvåle again impressed, repeating his Middle distance performance with another bronze medal. He was just 6 seconds slower than Lamov.

The two young Swedish stars Tove Alexandersson and Andreas Holmberg both took a clean sweep of the individual Junior World Championship medals – Tove was a member of the winning relay team too. She won today with a margin of 1.07 in a race lasting under an hour, whilst Andreas’s margin was 15 seconds.

The World Cup competitors now move on to Kazakhstan for a four-race round beginning on Wednesday.
