JWOC Long Distance: second gold for Ojanaho

Posted on | July 9, 2015 | Category: News

Olii Ojanaho, Finland added the Long Distance crown to his Middle Distance gold medal today, winning by a comfortable 1.15. Sweden’s Sara Hagström took the women’s gold.

In the women’s race Sandrine Mueller, Switzerland, bronze medalist at Middle Distance, took an early lead but her time was beaten first by Anna Haataja, Finland. Sara Hagström ran a strong race throughout and emerged the winner by 40 seconds. Switzerland was the only nation to have two athletes in the top six.

The men’s race was fought between three keen rivals, with Olli Ojanaho having the best run technically to take the gold medal. Simon Hector, silver medal-winner from Sweden, made several non-optimal route choices whilst Andreas Soelberg, Norway became tired and made some big errors towards the end – but finished in good enough form to take the bronze. Fourth, and the only non-Scandinavian or Swiss runner in a top-six position today, was Aidan Smith, Great Britain. There were two Norwegians and two Swedes in the top six.

The courses were set on typical Norwegian upland terrain with detailed rocky areas interspersed with many marshes. The finish was at Rauland Ski Centre, a fine venue with extensive views of the terrain. The final JWOC event, the Relay, will also be held here tomorrow.
