Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships: Gold for Nordström and Taivainen

Ski-JWOC 2009 kicked off with sprint distance in Orsa Grönklitt, Sweden. Olli-Markus Taivainen, Finland, took a clear victory in men’s class by 48 seconds before Gustav Nordström, Sweden, with Hans Jørgen Kvåle, Norway, on a third place a further 21 seconds down. Olli-Markus, last year 8th in the sprint, won the distance also two years ago in Austria.

The women’s competition was tighter, with the Swede Maria Nordström winning gold three seconds before Tatiana Medvedeva and six seconds before Tamara Ezhkova, both from Russia. All in all, it was a great day for Russia, with two medals and altogether five athletes on the podium (amongst the six best). Also the organising country Sweden could celebrate its two medals and altogether four podium places.
