Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships: Gold for Czech Republic in Sprint Race

Posted on | February 13, 2007 | Category: News

Hana Hanciková, Czech Republic, was the ‘star of the show’ in the first race of the Championships held at Sportgastein, near Salzburg, Austria. She won the sprint by 4 seconds from Helene Söderlund, Sweden, with Eva Svensson, also from Sweden, in third place a further 13 seconds down.

For Hana this was a brilliant victory after coming 13th and 14th in her two individual races at last year’s championships in Russia. It isn’t her first JWOC medal though; the Czech team took bronze in last year’s relay. All three medallists competed last year too, and this was Eva Svensson’s second JWOC individual bronze.

The men’s race produced a clear victory by 7 seconds for Finland’s Olli-Markus Taivainen, last year’s sprint bronze medallist. For second-placed Taras Kashchuk, Russia this was a second silver at sprint distance. The bronze medal went to Johan Edin, Sweden, who was 8th in the same race last year.

Six nations in all were represented on the podium, with Sweden taking three medals.
