Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships: A winter without problems

Posted on | February 11, 2010 | Category: News

This winter everything has gone well for Mikhail Utkin, and the Russian won gold in his first start ever in the Junior World Championships in ski orienteering.

-Last winter I broke my hand. The winter before I was ill, but this time there have been no problems, smiles the 19-year-old Russian. He is from Karelia, in the part of Russia that is close to Finland.

Mikhail’s training is mainly cross-country skiing; he orienteers only at races. And he did make some mistakes in today’s Middle distance; he believes he missed two to three minutes. -When I was out on the course I was thinking that I was on the way to be about tenth. It was a very big surprise that I won, he says.

Even though it his first Junior World Championships in ski orienteering, he has good experience from other international competitions. He has twice taken part in the Junior World Championships in mountain bike orienteering.

After the winner came the two Norwegians Rasmus Korvald Skaare and Vetle Ruud Bråten. The gap between first and second was exactly one minute. Norway took altogether four medals in the first distance in the Junior World Championships; the other two medals went to Russia.
