When Gleb Tikhonov took part in the European Youth Championships four years ago, he had a dream of winning a gold at the Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships. Now the Russian has achieved it.

“Great to have done it”, smiles Gleb.

The 18-year-old had a very good race and won a fascinatingly tight competition among the junior men in the sprint. Just six seconds was the difference to the Finn Tuomas Kotro in second place.

“Early on I fell into the deep snow, but after this fall everything went well,” Gleb says. The Moscow man is an all-year-round orienteer; last summer he took part in the Junior World Championships in foot orienteering in Denmark. “But there I didn’t do so well. I hope to do better at this year’s Junior World Championships in Poland in July”, he says.

Gleb is also among the very best in track and field in his age group in Russia, but ski orienteering is his main winter sport. He is quite experienced and has taken part in European Youth Championships in ski orienteering. “It was four years ago when I was at European Youth Championships in Bulgaria that I decided my goal was a junior world championships gold”, he says.

The Russian has one year left in the junior class.
