Junior World Orienteering Championships: Johan has the feeling

Posted on | July 8, 2008 | Category: News

The king of the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) has learnt how to avoid mistakes. The Swede, Johan Runesson, won three gold and a silver at JWOC.

He shed tears after winning the long distance at JWOC. Two days earlier he won the middle distance but the long is the number one distance for him. That was the distance he really wanted to do well in. On the sprint, he won silver and at the end of the championship he ran in front of his team mates, Erik Liljekvist and Olle Boström, into gold on the relay. What a championship for the 18 year old Swede.

– It was fantastic and it was very special in that it was in Sweden. There was great support, he says.

It was a couple of years ago that Johan found the way to success in the forest. For some years he had heard from his mother, Lena, that the best way of doing orienteering is to do it without making mistakes. After starting study at the orienteering school in Hallsberg and changing to the Tisaren Club, he developed a better way of running with a map.

– I managed to run safer and avoid making mistakes. I ran a little bit slower but made no mistakes. JWOC in Sweden was a bonus. I knew the style of mapmaking and the terrain, he says.

His prime goal is to be the very best in the world and he has plenty of time. He hopes to reach that goal sometime around 2018. In fact, he has two years left as a junior.
