Junior World Orienteering Championships: Eva wins more and more golds!

Now Eva Svensson has also become a world champion in foot orienteering; she has already won five gold medals in ski orienteering.

“I was so happy when it was for certain”, smiles Eva. In the last three years the Swede has had marvellous results in world championships in ski orienteering, foot orienteering and cross-country skiing. She is not really sure how many medals she has won in championships. “I have six golds and 12 or 13 medals in all”, she says.

Her victory at the first distance at this year JWOC was by just one second. For Eva it was a nail-biting wait at the end. “I was very nervous when I had finished. I didn’t try too hard to hope for a gold”, she says. Eva had herself decided not to start among the last ones – she chose group two out of the three. Normally the best ones start in the last group. “I didn’t want to start among the best. In the second group it also meant there was a bigger chance of seeing some backs in front of me”, she says.

Eva also did well in the sprint last year – she was third in the sprint in the championships in Lithuania. With this gold, in the zoo just outside Dubbo, she has now won gold in all four disciplines in orienteering and ski orienteering. In winter-time she has won gold in middle, long and relay. In cross-country skiing she has a silver from the relay last winter; Sweden was just beaten by Norway.

It was a really close battle in the sprint distance. Sarka Svobodna got the silver, just after Eva, and the bronze went to the Dane Maja Alm, who was beaten by four seconds by the Swede.

Eva ran fast but made some small mistakes at the beginning of the race. “It was technical and difficult in the first half of the race and I ran some extra metres and lost probably almost half a minute, but I just fought on and ran perfectly on the last bit, an easy part of the race”.

How will you celebrate the gold?

“That will have to wait. The championship has only just started, and with this sprint result I have taken the pressure away from myself”, she smiles.
