Junior World MTB Orienteering Championships: Sunny sprint distance

The sprint event opened the Junior World Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships in Denmark today. Russian juniors were strong in the women’s class, were four out of six podium places went to Russia. Fastest of all was Svetlana Poverina, who beat Kaisu Yli-Peltola (FIN) by eight seconds. In the junior men’s class the gold medal went to Czech Republic. Frantisek Bogár had a clear 46-second margin over Antti Vainio, who brought a second silver medal to Finland.

In the European Championships, which are held concurrently with the JWOC, the winners were familiar faces: Michaela Gigon, four-times World Champion, won the women’s race by almost a minute. Men’s winner Ruslan Gritsan has four gold medals from the World Championships as well.

The competitions continue tomorrow with middle distance.
