Junior World Championships Attracts 34 Nations

Posted on | June 28, 2004 | Category: News

The 2004 edition of the Junior World Championships in foot orienteering (JWOC) has attracted entries from 140 women and 156 men representing 34 IOF member nations. These include, as expected, all the active orienteering nations in Europe and Scandinavia; there are also a number of teams from much further afield, including full teams of 6 men and 6 women from Australia and Japan.

This year’s JWOC takes place in the Pomerania district of northern Poland, with the event centre in Gdansk. WKS Flota Gdynia, one of the biggest and most successful orienteering clubs in Poland, are the organisers. The programme starts with the Opening Ceremony on 5th July, and the race programme is:

6th July Middle Distance qualification
7th July Middle Distance final
8th July Long Distance race
10th July Relay

JWOC is for classes H20 and D20 (men and women 20 years old and younger). This year’s participants will be running in forest-covered moraine hill terrain with many paths and tracks and generally very good runnability, so competition will be fast and furious.

For further details, the JWOC website can be accessed directly from the IOF home page, and the media contact is Adam Suska at a.suska@prasabalt.gda.pl.
