Jokinen and Khrennikov head Ski Orienteering World Rankings

Posted on | March 18, 2005 | Category: News

Erja Jokinen, Finland and Eduard Khrennikov, Russia are the two top-ranked ski orienteering stars at the end of the 2004-2005 season.

Erja Jokinen heads the women’s rankings by 10 points from her closest rival, the Russian Tatiana Vlasova. Jokinen has had an excellent season overall, whilst not perhaps coming quite up to expectations in the World Championships (WOC), in which she won 2 silver individual medals. Vlasova was on her best form in the Championships, winning gold at both middle and long distances. Third in the rankings this year is Norway’s Stine Hjermstad Kirkevik, winner of the WOC sprint gold medal.

Eduard Khrennikov, WOC gold medallist in long distance, has been at the head of the rankings list throughout the season and finishes 27 points ahead of Bertil Nordqvist, Sweden who is now retiring from top international competition. The Russians Andrei Gruzdev and Ruslan Gritsan, joint gold medallists at middle distance, are in third and fourth places.

The last event of the 2004-2005 season was the 16th World Ski Orienteering Championships (Ski-WOC) held at Levi, Finland. In addition to the big ski orienteering nations such as Russia and the northern Scandinavian countries, which have terrain and weather conditions ideal for ski orienteering training and competition, the start field included a number of teams from much further afield. Among these was a big team from Japan, the newly-appointed organiser of the 18th Ski-WOC to be held near Sapporo in February 2009.
