JEC 2016 in Scotland coming up

Posted on | September 29, 2016 | Category: News

The Junior European Cup (JEC) is an annual high-level event for juniors, where the national teams can send a team twice the size as for JWOC. Therefore, the JEC, starting tomorrow, is a good occasion for the national teams to give some of the runners on the edge of the team some experience competing against some of the best juniors in the world. 17 countries have made use of that chance, among them Great Britain, Norway, Russia and Sweden, who are sending a full team of 24 runners.

This year, the JEC will take place around Stirling in Central Scotland. The weekend consist of two individual races and one relay. Four classes M18, W18, M20 and W20 will be decided in the two individual races while the relay only has one class for each gender.

Last time Scotland organized JEC was in 2010. Here the start of the women’s relay that ended with a Danish victory back then.

The JEC starts Friday 30 September with Sprint around Airthrey Castle and Stirling University. The area is a beautiful university campus dominated by a large lake, with a forested hillside and accommodation blocks to the north, and university buildings and park and woodland to the south.

Continuing Saturday 1 October the Relay takes place in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park northwest of Stirling. The runners can expect a mixture of deciduous runnable woodland, plantation forest slope and open areas with significant coverings of undergrowth. The terrain has contour detail throughout and some parts can be wet and marshy underfoot.

The event finishes with a Long distance Sunday 2 October just south of the Relay terrain and therefore not that different a terrain type.

After the three competitions, an ingenious scoring system will be used to crown a national team Junior European Cup Team Champions 2016.

Junior European Cup can be followed at liveresult at all three events.
