Japan has been appointed organiser of the 2009 World Ski Orienteering Championships. The championships will be held at the Rusutsu resort near Sapporo, Hokkaido, in Northern Japan. The events are scheduled for late February 2009.

“I am very pleased with the appointment. Japan is the first Asian country to host the World Ski Orienteering Championships and this is indeed of great importance for the future development of the sport. The Rusutsu resort offers excellent conditions for the World Championships” – IOF President Ake Jacobson.

The World Ski Orienteering Championships are held every second year. This week, the world’s elite ski orienteers meet up at Levi/Kittila, Finland, where the 16th World Ski Orienteering Championships will take place from 5th to 12th March 2005.

The 2007 World Ski Orienteering Championships have been awarded to Russia. The event will be held in Rybinsk, Yaroslavl region, some 380 km north of Moscow.
