“It’s just awesome”

When Milka Reponen started on the arena run-in she was number three. Just after finishing she didn’t know what the result was at all. “It was so close. I didn’t know if I had won”, the Finn says.

At the prize-giving she went up to the top of the podium. For the first time she was among the five best individually at a World Championships. Previous in the championships she has achieved a sixth place. Two years ago she took part in the Finnish bronze team in the Relay in Kazakhstan.

Just a few controls before the finish there was a bunch of women together. When they were on their way to the last control there were four Finns in front. It was amongst them where the battle for the gold was. “I know I have a good sprint at the end of a course. I have seen that from training in sprinting at camps with the national team”, she says.

Even though she knew she was very tough on the run-in, she hadn’t the best position with the last hundred metres remaining. Mervi Pesu was leading by some metres, but Milka passed her and into the finish the big battle was between her and Marjut Turunen.

It was so tight, and it took minutes before it was clear. 0.3 seconds was the gap between the two best.

“It’s awesome! For me any medal would have been great, and now it is gold.” All the four Finns finished within 2 seconds.

The 22-year-old winner is from in Multia in the middle of Finland, just 60 kilometres from Jyväskylä. Now she lives in Paimio, where Jukola will be held in June. Paimio is just 20 kilometres outside Turku. Her sporting life is combined with about half-time study in architecture.
