IOF Presidents’ Conference held in Scotland

Posted on | August 8, 2015 | Category: News

The IOF held its biannual Presidents’ Conference immediately after the Extraordinary General Assembly in Inverness, Scotland.

IOF President Brian Porteous referred to the move of the IOF Office from Finland, and expressed appreciation for the work of the former Secretary General Barbro Rönnberg, together with Anna Jacobson and Riikka Tolkki, the professional staff there, and for the support of the Finnish Orienteering Federation.

IOF Senior Vice President Leho Haldna spoke of the proposal to set up an IOF Anti-Doping Fund and an Athletes’ Licensing System for athletes in all disciplines competing in World Championship and World Cup events. It is proposed that these should operate from 2016. Further details will be announced during the autumn.

IOF Vice President Astrid Waaler Kaas outlined the remit of the new Regional Development Commission, its role being to support new and developing national federations and to encourage more youth participation. In addition to the Commission members themselves, three regional coordinators were helping with this work in different parts of the world, and these will be supplemented by a half-time IOF Global Development Officer soon to be appointed.

IOF Vice President Mike Dowling told of the major competitions review, and what next steps would be taken following the decision by the EGA earlier.

Chief Executive Officer Tom Hollowell introduced new members of the IOF staff and spoke of the targets and priorities in the next phase of IOF strategical development. Effective communication, strong management and better funding and use of funds are three specific targets for the near future. Anti-Doping control, IT support for Eventor and the WOC Senior Event Adviser role are being out-sourced.

All these topics attracted questions and comments from the National Federation Presidents present. The screen notes from the presentations at the Conference will be posted on the website shortly.

In connection with the Extraordinary General Assembly and Presidents’ Conference, Björn Persson (SWE) received IOF Gold Pin #8, recognizing his 22 years of service to the IOF.
