IOF Launches Expanded World Events Programme: First World Championships in Trail Orienteering

Posted on | March 11, 2004 | Category: News

The 2004 foot orienteering season sees the launch of the new IOF event programme which features both a World Championships and a World Cup programme every year. The annual Championships in foot-o for juniors and for veterans, the first ever World Championships in Trail Orienteering and the second World Championships in Mountain Bike Orienteering will contribute to a full and exciting programme of events in 2004.

Sweden has the honour of hosting this year’s World Championships, which will take place in the Västerås region west of Stockholm from 11th to 19th September. Not only will there be qualification races and finals in the four foot-o disciplines sprint, middle distance, long distance and relay; the first World Trail Orienteering Championships will be held at the same venue, with competitions on the 16th and 17th September. Trail Orienteering is the version of the sport created to provide full competition opportunities for the disabled – for more information on Trail Orienteering click here.

The 2004 World Cup consists of three rounds of events, the middle of which is the World Championships where each final will count for World Cup points. The World Cup season opens in Denmark, where there will be races in all foot-o disciplines with the finals being the European Championships. The dates are 10th to 17th July, and the event centre is Roskilde, a short journey west from Copenhagen. The World Cup Finals take place from 19th to 24th October based on Dresden, Germany, where again there will be races in every discipline.

The annual Junior World Championships in foot orienteering takes place this year in the period 4-11 July in the Pomerania district of northern Poland with the event centre in Gdansk, whilst the World Masters Championships will be held at Asiago in the foothills of the Dolomites in northern Italy from 3rd to 10th July.

Last but not least the 2nd World Mountain Bike Orienteering (MTBO) Championships take place in complex gold mining terrain in Victoria, Australia from 18th to 23rd October. Encountering a kangaroo on the trail will, the organisers say, be a distinct possibility!

For all the Championships and for the World Cup rounds, the event websites giving race programmes, further information and media accreditation details can be accessed directly from the Home Page of the IOF website, www.orienteering.org.
