Áron Less (IOF FootO Commission Chairman) represented the International Orienteering Federation at the International School Sports Federation (ISF) Technical Commissions Seminar in Olbia, Italy.

The IOF and the International School Sport Federation signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2016. As part of the cooperation, IOF was invited to the ISF Technical Commissions Seminar in Olbia, Italy, held from the 10th to the 13th October. The IOF was represented by FootO Commission Chairman Áron Less.

The ISF Technical Commissions seminar gathered sport experts involved in different Technical Commissions to discuss and shape the future of the ISF sport events format. For the first time, representatives of International Sports Federations, such as FIVB, FIFA, IHF, FIBA, FIS, IOF, BWF, FIG, IAAF were present to provide important insight to these issues. The partnership with the main International Sport Federations is an important step in the development of the ISF Vision 2030 for promoting sports development among young people from schools, and enhancing the sport programme of ISF events.

There were several other activities during the week, including presentations by different international experts on health, education and communication and also some other workshops. International Federations had the chance to discuss matters with ISF President Laurent Petrynka and ISF Sport and Development Manager Francesco Fiorini. The cooperation was discussed regarding World School Orienteering Championships and the possibility on how to develop World Orienteering Day further. The IOF was also represented in several communication activities.

Every second year, the ISF organises the World School Championships in Orienteering. The first official WSCO was organised in 1987. This year’s Championships, held between 22-28 April in Palermo, Italy, was the biggest single event World Championships in 2017 in all school sports, with 750 participants. Orienteering is thus a well-known and well-respected sport in the world of School Sport.

The next Championships will take place in Otepää, Estonia, between 29th April and 4th May 2019. The organised classes (age groups) are:

  • M/W 1: 16, 17 and 18 years old / maximum two participants aged 18 years (born 2003 – 2002 – 2001)
  • M/W 2: 14 and 15 years old (born 2005 – 2004)

There is a separate category for school teams (all 5 of the team should have full-time attendance at the same school) and for selected (National) teams. A meeting was held with the Estonian organisers and the Championships look set to be really successful.

The IOF gave input to the Technical Commission on how to improve the Championships for the future, including the programme, competition formats, etc. The ISF orienteering family still misses some important orienteering nations, like Norway, Switzerland and Denmark. If you need more information about the World School Championships in Orienteering, please contact the President of the ISF Technical Commission for Orienteering, Mr. Karl KEUPPENS at karl.keuppens (at) telenet.be

“The cooperation with ISF is an excellent tool to increase the attractiveness of orienteering to young people. We should make every effort to strengthen this cooperation in order to achieve one of IOF’s strategic initiatives.” concludes Áron Less.
