Historic World Masters Championships approaching

Posted on | July 15, 2014 | Category: News

The IOF goes for the first time to South America with an IOF Major Event, when the World Masters Orienteering Championships will be staged in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in November 2014.

Brazil is not an inexperienced organiser though, having organised several unofficial South American Orienteering Championships, as well as several CISM (military) events such as the latest the CISM World Military Games in 2011: http://www.cism-milsport.org/eng/003_SPORTS/015_orient/results.asp.

Already some 1500 orienteers have registered to Brazil, and it is still possible to join them. The final entry deadline is 20 September 2014. Everyone born 1979 or earlier can take part in the World Masters Orienteering Championships, and those younger than that can enter the Open Events organised during the week. The event website is: http://wmoc2014.org.br/en/

Programme and terrain

The Championships begin on 30 October with arrival and official training. On Saturday 1 November there is the Sprint model event and Opening Ceremony, and the competitions begin on Sunday 2 November with Sprint qualification. The last race, the Long distance final, takes place on Saturday 8 November.

The Event Centre is between the towns of Canela and Gramado, in State Rio Grande do Sul in Southern Brazil. The WMOC organises transport from Event Centre to all competitions. You can book the transportation on the event website when entering the event. Also rental cars are available, and there is plenty of parking space at the competitions.

“The terrains are very suitable for veterans, with different technical challenges from race to race”, says Senior Event Adviser Øivind Holt. More about the terrain can be read in Inside Orienteering 1/2014.

Safety and climate

Øivind Holt says he is often asked about safety in Brazil. “Safety has not been an issue at all when I have visited the areas, and definitely not in Canela. In down-town Porto Alegre I have been warned not to walk along murky streets after dark, but that advice is valid in any big city around the world”, he comments.

Weather in the area is typically warm and pleasant during this time of the year. The temperatures range from 14 to 24 degrees Celsius.

Accommodation possibilities and more

A wide range of accommodation is offered near the Event Centre. The main industry of the twin towns Canela and Gramado is tourism, and visitors will find a variety of good places to eat and shop. Accommodation possibilities range from international hotels, apartment hotels and guest houses to cottages. The area is a well-known wine district and there is the opportunity for wine-tasting and tours at a number of vineyards.
