Gold medalist trained for these championships since 2009

Since the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) in Italy in 2009 this years championships have been a big goal for Dmitry Nakonechnyy, Russia. His individual races ended with a gold medal on middle distance.

“Cool that it became a shared gold”, the Russian smiles.

He is taking part in his third JWOC and has become one of the very best. Before this year’s championships an 18th place on the middle distance last year was his best result.

“I am training hard and running a lot in wintertime. When the snow is gone I am training a lot with maps, but I am not competiting so much. When I compete, I do it with full speed and full concentration”, Dmitry says.

The 20-year-old athlete is from Kaliningrad and lives just 150 kilometres from where the championships are held. “The terrain is not so different from home. There is more under vegetation at home and more pine forest, but I still feel quite close to home here.”

During the race Dmitry felt it was going well, but he did not believe in victory: “I didn’t think I was going to win!”
