Albania is taking a big step towards the IOF, and OCA – Orienteering Club Albania is the leader.
Like in many other countries in Europe or on other continents, orienteering has finally also arrived in Albania, a small country with beautiful places, still unknown to most people.
Albania has a lot of beautiful areas with sea, rivers, lakes, mountains, and antique and historical monuments. Albania is one of the best places to practice the sport of orienteering, with a lot of many different terrains. Let’s talk about orienteering in Albania:
In 2013 Peo Bengtsson invited Arlind Subashi from Albania, Adnan Namani from Kosovo together with Inge Bosina from Austria, living in Albania, to O-Ringen Academy in Boden. This was the first time that Arlind took part in different races outside Kosovo, where he had started with some park races and thus became the first Albanian orienteer. He is an athlete from Tirana who came up with the idea to bring orienteering to Albania. In the autumn he started his studies at the NSA (National Sports Academy) in Sofia to become the first trainer for Orienteering sport and athletics in Albania. He had also already participated successfully in several international races. He is helped by Inge Bosina, project coordinator with support from the IOF since 2014.
Last autumn, all the administrative and bureaucratic steps were finally overcome and the first club OCA-Orienteering Club Albania was created by Arlind Subashi and Ledio Behri, Marvin Xhemrishi, Rei Cizmja, who are his closest friends. They became official members of the club. After this the club was expanded including young orienteers from the city of Shkodra. An important task that OCA has, is to spread the message to all the people interested in sports, and to organise trainings and events. Last year, the first international event took place in the Shkodra region, with participation of orienteers from many countries.
As a next step towards the IOF, the club applied to be a member of the Albanian Mountaineering federation, until the time when there are enough clubs to have an own Orienteering Federation – following the example of Montenegro.
This year the first big task for the new club is the organisation of the Albanian Orienteering Days 2016 in the Tirana region. There will be organized 3 races in Dajti Mountain, Cape of Rodon and a sprint in Tirana´s “Qyteti Studenti” from 29 ͭ ͪ April to 1ˢͭ May which will hopefully host many orienteers from different countries from all over the world, but also with participation of Albanians for the first time.
OCA is only at the very beginning in development of Orienteering in Albania. To ensure successful work, OCA is waiting for support from the International Orienteering community, because every beginner needs more impulses from the masters. Then OCA is going to be very successful here in Albania. We hope to offer you more events and also training possibilities on our maps in the future, where everyone is welcomed to participate.
