Finland will host World Orienteering Championships in 2013

Posted on | August 25, 2009 | Category: News

For first time in the IOF history a nation will host the World Orienteering Championships for a fourth time: Finland won the fight against Italy for the World Championships 2013. Finland has previously organised the World Championships in 1966 in Fiskars, and in 1979 and 2001 in Tampere. The newly appointed organisers are promising good TV coverage and a huge crowd of spectators.

Finland has been working for a long time to prepare for the World Orienteering Championships (WOC) 2013, and their good preparations were a big reason for the IOF council to select the Nordic country. The council praised both applicants and encouraged Italy to come back with a new application for a later year.

– Finland had come further in their work, said Åke Jacobson, the president of the IOF.

WOC 2013 will be organised in Vuokatti, a popular sports place with varying orienteering terrains. The spectators can take part in the Kainuu orienteering week – the organisers are expecting about 10000 participants for the spectators’ races. Normally there are approximately 4000 orienteers taking part at the Kainuu orienteering week.
