Exciting World Championships Mixed Relay

Posted on | March 24, 2011 | Category: News

A real cliffhanger thriller took place today, when a mixed sprint relay was organized for the first time at the World Ski Orienteering Championships in Tänndalen Sweden.

Mixed relay consists of a team with one man and one woman each running three short relay legs in consecutive order.
A record 23 nations lined up to fight for medals and other positions.

Russian team, Andrey Grigoriev and Polina Malchikova, were in the leading pack throughout the race, but during most of the race Finnish duo, Matti Keskinarkaus and Liisa Anttila, were keeping the pace, closely followed by the Norwegian and Swedish teams.
” We were all the time in close contact with the other teams. In the last leg, Polina managed to get ahead of the other teams and with her strong finish secured the gold for us”, stated the happy Grigoriev.
“We had just one strategy. Go as fast as we can doing our own race, and not to pay attention to the other teams”, accompanied Malchikova, who took her second gold medal in these Championships.

In a very tight fight for silver and bronze, Sweden’s Helene Söderlund was able to push hardest in the finish securing a silver to Sweden and her teammate Peter Arnesson. Finland took the bronze before disappointed Norway with Hans-Jörgen Kvaale and Stine Olsen Kirkevik in the team.

Tomorrow the World Championships have a rest day before final events of Long Distance races on Saturday and Relays on Sunday.
