European TrailO Championships: Italy and Sweden win first-ever official Relay event

Posted on | May 24, 2016 | Category: News

Italy came away with the Open class gold medals from the first competition in the TrailO Championships, a 3-person relay. Sweden finished in silver medal position, and bronze medallists were Slovakia. Sweden won the Paralympic class with the Czech Republic second and Russia third.

This was the first-ever official relay competition at international level, following a trial competition at last year’s World Championships in Croatia. Nations could enter up to two teams in both Open and Paralympic classes, and thirty-four teams representing sixteen nations were represented in the mass start. The terrain was a hilly park with paved paths at Jesenik Spa.

The athletes on the first 2 legs had 10 PreO controls and 2 TempO stations. The third leg team member had 12 PreO controls and the same two TempO stations, but then competed also at a public TempO station, with the best athletes starting last. Both classes had the same course but the overall time allowance for the Paralympic class was greater.

Remo Madella, Michele Cera and Alessio Tenani were on top form for Italy and achieved a convincing overall victory. Portugal, Norway and Finland took positions 4 to 6 in the Open class. Full results can be seen on the website

Tomorrow the TempO competition takes place, with qualification in the morning and the Final in late afternoon.
