Posted on | February 12, 2017 | Category: Arena, News

Victory went to Russia’s women and Sweden’s men in the final races of the Championships today. The women’s margin was 48 seconds, whereas the men’s race had a closer finish, 14 seconds separating first and second.

The women’s race was very tight after the first leg and only began to unfold on the second, where Russia’s Polina Frolova set up a 6-second lead over Magdalena Olsson, Sweden. At this point Finland was in sixth place, more than a minute down. On the last leg Mariya Kechkina established a good lead to take a comfortable victory, but the fastest by more than 2 minutes on this leg was the Finn Salla Koskela who brought her team up four places into silver medal position. Tove Alexandersson made sure it was bronze for Sweden, ending 1.16 down on Russia’s time.

The men’s race also saw a mass changeover after the first leg, with Bulgaria and Sweden just behind the joint leaders Russia and Finland. The decisive point of the race was Ulrik Nordberg’s performance on second leg for Sweden, where he set up a lead of 1.25 over all the other teams. At this point Russia 2, in second place with veteran Eduard Khrennikov, was 17 seconds ahead of Russia 1 (Kirill Veselov). On the final leg, Sergey Gorlanov for Russia 2 did his best to haul in Erik Rost of Sweden, and finished almost a minute up on Russia 1. The bronze medals went to Finland, with Ville Petteri Saarela picking up a place from Latvia on the last leg.
