European Ski Orienteering Championships: Sprint golds for Vlasova and Arnesson

Posted on | February 4, 2011 | Category: News

Two very experienced and successful ski orienteers demonstrated their class today with victories in the European Ski Orienteering Championships  sprint. Tatiana Vlasova, Russia and Peter Arnesson, Sweden were today’s gold medal winners.

Vlasova, silver medallist in the long distance race two days ago, took the women’s sprint title by just 3 seconds from her compatriot Polina Malchinkova, who achieved her best-ever result in international ski orienteering. The bronze medal went to Josefine Engström, Sweden, who was 10 seconds down on the winner.

Arnesson’s win was more comfortable – a margin of 19 seconds to silver medallist Staffan Tunis, Finland. Olli-Markus Taivainen, Finland, long distance silver medallist on Wednesday, took the bronze a further 6 seconds down.

The Junior World Championships sprint produced exactly the same 6 medallists as in the long distance, plus Tuomas Kotro, Finland: there was a tie for the men’s bronze medal. Gold medallists this time were Tove Alexandersson, Sweden and Gleb Tikhonov, Russia.
