Both Norway and Russia had two heat winners in today’s qualification races over Long Distance at Bilá Voda, Czech Republic, where the men’s race in particular was hard with only one athlete finishing in under 70 minutes. The other two heat winners were from the home country and Switzerland.
Seventeen qualify from each of three heats, giving fifty-two runners in the two Finals which take place at the same venue tomorrow afternoon. Heat winners start last in the Final.
Fastest in the women’s heats was the Russian Natalia Vinogradova, and the other two heat winners were Svetlana Mironova, also Russia, and Heidi Bagstevold, Norway. The women who miss out on the A-final include the two very experienced athletes Inge Dambe, Latvia and Inge Kazlauskaite, Lithuania.
Home runner Miloš Nykodým had the best race of his international career so far in winning his heat today. Daniel Hubmann, Switzerland, with the fastest time today, and Magne Dæhli, Norway won the other two men’s heats. There were no big surprises amongst those who miss the A-final, although it was a close thing for Kiril Nikolov, Bulgaria, who has finished 6th in Long Distance at both World and European level; he finished in the last qualifying place in his heat today.
