Double victory for Sweden

Posted on | March 3, 2012 | Category: News

It was a particularly good day for Sweden in the Ski Orienteering World Cup Middle distance mass start races in Kazakhstan today. On technically demanding courses with many route choices, Josefine Engström and Peter Arnesson took the top podium places, with Tove Alexandersson and Erik Rost both in second place.

The women’s race was in the end won comfortably by Engström, who finished 17 seconds in front of Alexandersson, but for much of the race it was a close fight. The Russian Yulia Tarasenko finished strongly to come in third only 2 seconds behind Alexandersson. There was then a gap of 41 seconds to the fourth-placed home athlete Olga Novikova.

The leading Russian in the men’s class this year, Andrey Grigoriev, did his best to break the Swedish dominance but failed by just 4 seconds to do so. This race was quite tight with the first seven finishing within half a minute. The World Cup leader Staffan Tunis was seventh today.

The round in Kazakhstan ends tomorrow with a Mixed Sprint Relay.
