Daniel Hubmann: “I’m not 20 years old any longer”

Posted on | October 5, 2014 | Category: Arena

Daniel Hubmann is one of the most successful athletes in the orienteering world, but do you think he sees an end to his career? An injury stop has had an influence on his route choices.

Now he has finished one more World Cup season, and won the last two races. In total in the World Cup he got 1058 points. Fabian Hertner was second best with 519 points. An amazing difference. “Not everyone has gone so hard for the World Cup as I have. The margin is almost too big!”

– But it must also be good to have more than double the points of the second best?

“Yes, it is,” he smiles.

Next weekend he will have a private training camp in Scotland. He has also been there with the national team. “I will also take part in some races in Scotland,” he says.

– How are you looking to the future?

“I’m not 20 years old any longer. I am not looking 10 years forward. I don’t know if I will be in the business in two or five years ahead. If I stop, I have do some work! Just now, orienteering is my best thing to do. About the future, the most important thing is my motivation.”

He lost almost the whole of 2012 due to injuries. It was a long time out of the business. “For the future, the gap was probably a good thing. Had I been into it all the time, I am not sure I will have had the same motivation to go on,” he says.

– How is your level now?

“It’s really good.”

– Better than ever?

“It’s not so easy to say, but it can be.”

– And next year can it be even better?

“I will work for that.”

How old is Daniel? He’s 31; time for a lot more triumphs.
