The young and maybe not so young Austrians are not only training orienteering when they are at camps. That has been a plus on the way to their best Sprint Relay result ever in the World Cup.

Austria finished seventh in the final race in the Sprint Relay World Cup. Earlier, a ninth place was the best. Overall they were tenth.

“But we are young and will get better,” smile the Austrians. The smiles are even broader among some of them. Gernot Kerschbaumer is now 33 years old. “But I will of course not stop.”

The other three in the Austrian first team were Ursula Kadan (28), Robert Merl (25) and Laura Ramstein (24).

Even better team spirit

Before the final race in Aarau, the Austrians planned courses for each other and really studied the map, and were very motivated for doing well. “We have always had a good team spirit in the team, but now it is even better than earlier. At the camps we are playing and doing games together in other things than orienteering. The team spirit has grown over the last year.”

The Austrians are now looking forward to the last races in Aarau and to next year. “Every one of us will go on!”

Well prepared

The final was in a flat area with some special challenges. “It was a bit tricky. You really had to be concentrated on the right forking and the controls. All of us ran very well,” the four Austrians say.

They finished 2.51 minutes behind winners Switzerland, and it’s their best performance ever in the World Cup in Sprint Relay, but of course not like the bronze at the World Games in Colombia.
