All dependent on the run-in

The women’s class was decided only on the run-in from the very last control into the finish. Siri Ulvestad made it a Norwegian victory.

It really looked likely to be a Swedish victory in the women’s class on the last leg. Jenny Lönnkvist, who won the middle distance and is superb technically, had a lead of about one minute at one point on the last leg. Norwegian Siri Ulvestad started as number one on the last leg, but she made some mistakes at the beginning of the leg and she was passed by several teams.

On the first of the controls on the last of the three loops, Jenny made a mistake and Siri picked her up. Then they were close to each other for the rest of the race, where there were common controls for everybody. Jenny was in front to the last control and punched just before Siri. The Norwegian thought the Swede was running extremely fast. But on the last 200 metres the roles were changed.

Siri attacked directly after the last control, and first the Swede almost held the difference, but the Norwegian managed to get in front. Just half the way to the finish the Norwegian stumbled as she crossed a ditch and there was a small collision with the Swede on the way up to the line. But Siri managed to recover and won a thrilling sprint finish by just 1 metre.
