Alexandersson wins in summer and in winter – first gold to Barchukov

Posted on | March 11, 2014 | Category: News

Tove Alexandersson has recovered from her bad day on Sunday, and what a recovery! She took a clear victory on the European Ski Orienteering championships Middle distance in Tyumen, Russia today. This makes her a World Cup event winner in both foot and ski orienteering – this year! She won earlier the Orienteering World Cup Opening Round in Turkey.

After Alexandersson, there were three Finns and four Russians on the result list, showing the strentgh of those nations before tomorrow’s relay that concludes the European Championships.

Men’s race was a fight between two Russians, Vladimir Barchukov and Sprint winner Andrei Lamov. At the end, Barchukov  was four seconds faster than his team-mate. Bronze medallist, IOF Athletes’ Commission Chair Hans Jørgen Kvåle (Norway) finished 36 seconds slower than the winner. It is worth mentioning that Russia had five men amongst the ten best, and Norway two.

The warm Siberian winter had made the tracks soft and the skiing extremely tough especially on the narrow tracks.

The European Championships continue tomorrow with Relay. IT will be shown live on online TV with English and Russian commentary: http://esoc2014.ru/live/ from 8:35 GMT on. On Friday, the Ski Orienteering World Cup concludes with Ultra-long distance with mass start.
