Alexandersson and Kyburz take top World Cup placings

Posted on | September 30, 2017 | Category: Arena, News

The favourites today were the winners, on the day and overall. Tove Alexandersson and Matthias Kyburz overcame all opposition in dominant style, with leading times almost throughout in today’s Middle race.

Tove Alexandersson’s victory was by 1.15 over yesterday’s winner Elena Roos. This means that she heads the final standings by 69 points over Natalia Gemperle, with Sabine Hauswirth taking third place.

Alexandersson has had a wonderful season, taking 5 victories in the 10 World Cup races, and today she was fastest throughout the race. Second-placed Roos had a very consistent run today apart from leg 3-4 where she lost more than half a minute. Gemperle started a little slowly and was never in a position to match Alexandersson’s time, finishing 1.49 down.

Matthias Kyburz was fastest from control 3 in the 24-control race, and won by 56 seconds over his compatriot Daniel Hubmann, with Emil Svensk in third place, 1.57 down on the winner, and Olav Lundanes fourth.

Lundanes was Kyburz’s closest challenger for the overall title, and he ends second with 120 points fewer than Kyburz. This is Kyburz’s fourth overall win – the others were in 2012, 2013 and last year. Hubmann finishes third overall. Kyburz and Lundanes both have 2 wins and 2 second places in this year’s World Cup races, whilst Hubmann has 1 win and 1 second. Overall the men’s top placings in the ten races have been spread over a much greater number of athletes than is the case for the women.

Sweden had four finishers in the first six in the women’s race today, and Switzerland achieved the same feat in the men’s.

The World Cup season finishes tomorrow with the Relay Final, a Sprint Relay within the town of Grindelwald which starts at 14.25 local time.
