A surprised winner

Yngve Skogstad won by more than a minute in the long distance.

Norwegian Yngve Skogstad was somewhat surprised to win the long distance at the Junior World Orienteering Championships in Poland. He really had not dreamt about being a junior world champion. “I have never before been at the level of the very best in the world”, he says.

Yngve first took part in Junior World Championships last year. The Norwegian finished 59th in the long distance race then, but a lot has happened in a year. Perhaps the most important of all is that he has been focusing especially on the mental aspects of competition. Now the final-year junior tries to look positively at everything. And that is exactly what he did in the long distance in Wejherowo.

“When I made some small mistakes I thought yes, but I am still having a good race. At the start I was thinking that in this kind of running I am one of the very best”, Yngve says. He is from Mo i Rana in the northern part of Norway, but has for almost a year been living in Trondheim, where the World Championships were held last year.

From the beginning of the year Yngve has been orienteering full-time. “I have had more time to rest, and I also had the chance to go to the Baltic Games for more preparation in Polish terrain before the Junior World Championships”, he says.

What about your studies?
“I found that the topic I had started with wasn’t right for me. I will find something new to study in the autumn.”

The victory feels fantastic, but Yngve hasn’t reached his big dream yet. “My goal is to get a medal in a senior World Championships. To be a junior champion is just a step on the way to that”, he explains.

The top three from left: Robert Merl, Austria, Yngve Skogstad, Norway, Lucas Basset, France. Florian Howald, Switzerland, Pavel Kubát, Czech Republic, and Gleb Tikhonov, Russia, took places 4-6.
