A good year to master the sprint

Posted on | June 14, 2009 | Category: News

The World Cup kicked off this week with middle and sprint races in Salo, Finland. Swedes dominated the middle distance, but in the sprint, two runners were in their own league. Last year they both finished second in the World Orienteering Championships sprint. At this year’s first World Cup sprint, they were unbeatable. The winners Minna Kauppi and Daniel Hubmann will be tough to beat this summer on any distance – and this year it’s especially important to master the sprint.

Sprint is one of the two individual distances at The World Games in Chinese Taipei in July, and even the map of the middle distance is drawn according to the International Specification for Sprint Orienteering Maps there.

The first World Cup event, middle distance, was a good race for the Swedes. Peter Öberg has run several excellent middle distance competitions this year and he won the race in Salo convincingly. Öberg will surely challenge Hubmann this summer both at The World Games and the World Championships. Also the Swedish women are in good shape: Helena Jansson won the middle and was fifth in the sprint. However, it is Minna Kauppi (FIN) who is leading the World Cup after two events. In the men’s class, Thierry Gueorgiou (FRA) has the lead after finishing amongst the three best in both the races.
