2005 Junior World Championships: Junior Elite heading for Switzerland

Posted on | July 8, 2005 | Category: News

Junior elite runners from 36 nations are converging this weekend on the town of Tenero, in the southernmost part of Switzerland close to the border with Italy, for the 2005 Junior World Championships (JWOC).

As many as 147 women and 174 men are entered for the Championships. Full teams are entered from as far away as Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and New Zealand. The home nation Switzerland has a long tradition of success in JWOC but will be strongly challenged by the Scandinavian nations and Russia in particular.

Four very contrasting areas have been chosen for the competitions, which start on Tuesday with the Middle Distance Qualification and end on Saturday with the Relay. To achieve success, competitors will need good technical skills in the often complex terrain, and will also have to be on top form physically to cope with the hilly terrain with many steep slopes and sometimes stony ground.

As a curtain-raiser for the Championships, a junior sprint competition is being held on Sunday afternoon in conjunction with the PostFinance Sprint, an annual event for senior elite orienteers which will be covered by Swiss TV. From 2006 the sprint discipline will be an official part of the JWOC programme.

Full details of this year’s JWOC can be found in Bulletin 3 on the event website, accessible directly from the home page of the IOF website, www.orienteering.org. The IOF website will carry reports, interviews, leading results and pictures after each day of competition.
