2004 Junior World Championships: Gold for Matthias Merz and Silja Tarvonen

Posted on | July 9, 2004 | Category: News

Matthias Merz, Switzerland is certainly making his mark in elite orienteering at junior level. He has now added a gold medal in the long distance race to the silver he acquired at middle distance, thus equalling his tally of individual medals gained at the 2003 JWOC. But it was a very close call; Sweden’s Martin Johansson was just one second slower over the 11.5 km course, and Lithuania’s Simonas Krepsta gained his second bronze medal of the championships, 9 seconds further behind.

In the women’s race over 8.1 km, the gold medal went to Silja Tarvonen, Finland, with an impressive run which was almost 2 minutes quicker than silver-medallist Veline Stalder, Switzerland. Alison O’Neil, Great Britain improved one place on her middle distance performance to take the bronze.

The race was a gruelling experience for the runners with temperatures up to 28 degrees, but there is now a rest day before the relay race on Saturday.
